What I Gained...
My takeaway...
Working as an intern with the Hope Heart Institute and having this hands-on opportunity to educate others about the importance of preventative care was an important milestone in my path towards professionalism. Not only did it solidify my love for health and education, but it allowed me to strengthen my ability to facilitate training's in working alongside a team. From this experience, I became much more aware of the diversity of the Seattle community and the various challenges that underrepresented populations faced. This leadership experience added value and substance to my school work and the work I will do in the future as a public health professional. |
My internship with the Hope Heart Institute was the first time I served as an intern for a company. In this position, I was exposed to a diverse group of neighborhoods around the Greater Seattle Area and learned about some of the socioeconomic challenges they faced and its impact on access to health education. I worked at many outreach events in schools, community centers, and retirement homes with the intent to educate people on how to make better nutrition choices, the importance of physical activity, and even aided in CPR instructions for older populations.
This internship is very important to me because it was the first position I held in the field of public health. It gave me a glimpse into the daily lives of those working in a non-profit and I was able to talk to my co-workers about their previous paths as well as their advice to me on how to get where I wanted to be career-wise. In working with this community, I felt a sense of reassurance that I had chosen a path that suited my passion for health promotion and could easily see myself doing it for the rest of my life.
